Semi Air Brake Problems: What a Mobile Tech Can Fix, and When You Need a Tow
Air system faults are the most common reason a tractor stops moving, and they are also the faults most often over-treated with a tow bill. Here is how our techs triage an air call on I-35, what gets fixed on the shoulder, and where the honest line is between a repair and a wrecker.

Why won't my semi build or hold air pressure?
If your tractor will not build or hold air, the cause is usually a leak, a failed governor, a stuck brake valve, or frozen moisture in the lines. Most of these are repairable at roadside by a mobile truck. A tow is only necessary when the fault is structural, the compressor has failed outright, or the unit cannot be safely released.

Stop driving on a low-air warning
This is the one non-negotiable. When system pressure falls below roughly 60 psi, the spring brakes apply on their own. That is the system working exactly as designed — but if it happens at highway speed in traffic, you are a stopped obstacle with no warning to anyone behind you.
The moment the buzzer sounds, plan your exit. Get to a shoulder or ramp while you still have pressure to modulate the brakes, set the unit, and make the call from there. Every minute you keep rolling on a falling gauge narrows your options.
How a tech isolates the fault
Air diagnosis is mostly disciplined listening. The tech charges the system to governor cutout, shuts the engine down, and watches the leak-down rate on the gauge. A fast drop means a substantial leak, and with the engine off most leaks are audible — gladhands, service lines, chamber diaphragms, and fittings all announce themselves.
If the system never reaches cutout, attention moves to the supply side: is the compressor loading at all, and is the governor signalling correctly? A governor is a small, cheap part that strands a large number of trucks, and it is a routine field replacement.
If pressure holds fine but a wheel end is hot, the problem is mechanical rather than pneumatic — an out-of-adjustment slack adjuster or a seized S-cam dragging the shoe against the drum. That is also field work, and catching it early is the difference between an adjustment and a burned-up brake assembly.
Where the repair-or-tow line actually sits
Our default is to repair on scene, because it is faster and cheaper for you and it keeps the load moving. Leaks, governors, dryers, slack adjusters, chambers, valves, gladhands, and lines are all things a properly stocked mobile truck handles at the roadside.
A tow is the right call in a narrower set of cases: the compressor has failed outright, there is frame or structural damage, the failed component cannot be safely serviced where the truck sits, or the technician cannot restore braking he would stake his own license on. In those situations the unit moves on a heavy wrecker, and if the trailer is loaded the freight may move separately.
If a shop tells you a routine air leak requires a tow, get a second opinion. Most do not.
Preventing the call in the first place
- Drain the tanks on a schedule. Moisture is the single largest contributor to air system failure, and it compounds in winter when it freezes lines.
- Replace the air dryer cartridge at interval. A saturated dryer passes water straight into the tanks and quietly destroys valves downstream.
- Mark your pushrods. A paint mark turns a measurement into a glance and catches out-of-stroke chambers before an inspector does — see our DOT inspection checklist.
- Treat a new hiss as a fault. Small leaks become stranding leaks, and they rarely pick a convenient place to finish failing.
Calling it in
Tell dispatch the symptom rather than a diagnosis: what the gauge does, whether the compressor cuts in, whether you can hear escaping air, and whether any wheel end is hot. Add your location with direction of travel and whether you are loaded.
