Flat Drive Tire on the Interstate: Recognize It, Handle It, Get Off Safely
A drive tire coming apart at 65 mph feels different from a slow leak in a parking lot, and it calls for a different response. This covers steer, drive, and trailer positions — heavy-duty, light-duty, and semi — in one place, because the physics and the decision tree are the same regardless of which class of vehicle you're driving.

What do I do if a drive tire fails on the interstate?
A drive tire failing at highway speed feels like a heavy thump and a pull toward the bad side. Hold the wheel, stay off the brake, and let the vehicle slow on its own before easing to the right shoulder. A shredded drive tire can tear up fenders, wiring, air lines, and mudflap hangers if you keep driving — stop as soon as you can do it safely, then call it in with the position, size, and your mile marker.
Recognizing the failure at speed
A tire that's about to go rarely fails silently. Watch and feel for a vibration that builds over a mile or two rather than appearing all at once — that's usually a belt separating inside the tread before it lets go completely. A sudden heavy thump followed by a rhythmic thud is the tire itself coming apart, chunks of tread hitting the wheel well or the road. A pull to one side, sometimes strong enough to require real effort on the wheel, means one tire lost air or structure faster than its neighbor.
Tread separation and casing damage are two different failure modes worth telling apart, because they change what happens next. Tread separation is the outer rubber layer peeling off the belts — loud, dramatic, and usually survivable if you handle the next ten seconds correctly. Casing damage is structural: a cut, a puncture near the sidewall, or impact damage that weakens the carcass of the tire itself. A tire with casing damage can look driveable and still fail again without warning, which is why a tech needs to see it rather than take your word that "it's just flat now."
Why hard braking makes it worse
The instinct when something goes wrong under you is to stand on the brake. With a blowout that's close to the worst move available. Braking hard shifts weight onto the axle that just lost a tire, and if that axle no longer has even grip side to side, the vehicle can pull sharply, fishtail, or in a loaded truck, jackknife or roll. Sudden steering input does something similar — it asks a compromised axle to change direction faster than what's left of the tire can manage.
Instead: ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel firmly and straight, and let the vehicle scrub off speed on its own. Most of the danger window is the first few seconds after the failure, and coasting through it in a straight line is what gets you through. Once you're down to a manageable speed and tracking straight, brake gently and work toward the shoulder.
Getting to the right shoulder
On a divided highway, the right shoulder is almost always the safer stop. It's wider on most Kansas City-area interstates, it's the side approaching traffic expects a stopped vehicle on, and it puts you and anyone getting out of the cab a step farther from the fastest-moving lane. The left shoulder — the inside shoulder next to the median or the barrier wall — is often narrower, sometimes barely wide enough for the vehicle itself, and a driver coming up on a left-lane hazard has less time to react than one approaching a right-shoulder stop.
If the vehicle is still rolling and steering after the failure, use that window to work across to the right rather than settling for wherever you happen to stop. If you're already stopped on the left with no safe way to move — which happens on stretches of I-70 and I-435 where the inside shoulder is all there is — stay belted in the cab with your hazards on and tell both dispatch and 911 that you're on the left. That detail changes how a response gets staged.
Why driving on a shredded drive tire does more damage than the tire
Once a drive tire has thrown its tread, what's left spinning is a ring of steel belt and rubber chunks, not a tire. Every rotation at speed throws that material outward and upward. On the vehicle itself it tears into the fender and wheel well, shreds wiring harnesses routed along the frame rail, can rupture air lines feeding the brakes, and rips mudflap hangers loose. On a straight truck or tractor pulling a trailer, debris from a failed drive tire can be thrown up into the trailer's belly or landing gear area as well.
None of that is optional damage — it's what a bare wheel does to everything around it when you keep driving on it. A tire replacement is a fraction of the cost of the fender, harness, and air-line repair that follows a driver pushing five or ten more miles "to find a better spot." Stop as soon as you can do it safely. That's a shorter distance than it feels like from the driver's seat.
Steer tire vs drive tire vs trailer tire: how the stakes differ
Position changes both the danger and the urgency. A steer tire is the only tire doing the steering on that side — there's no mate tire to share the load, so a steer failure is an immediate stop, full stop, no judgment call about finishing the exit ramp. A drive tire failure is serious but often more manageable in the moment, because on a dual setup the second tire on that hub is usually still holding air and can get you to the shoulder. A trailer tire failure is frequently the hardest to notice from the cab — there's little to no steering feedback, sometimes just a smell of hot rubber or a report from another driver — but a trailer riding on a damaged tire for miles can still do real damage to the fender, the axle, and anything mounted near it.

Duals: what running on the mate tire costs you
When one tire in a dual pair fails, the tire next to it suddenly carries an axle load it was never rated to hold alone. For the short distance it takes to reach a genuinely safer place to stop, that's exactly the situation duals exist for. Past that distance, the surviving tire is running overloaded and overheating, and it can fail the same way its partner did — at which point you've lost the whole hub rather than half of it. Treat running on a mate tire as a get-to-safety measure, not a way to finish a route, and have both tires looked at before the vehicle moves again.
Roadside replacement vs a tow
Most flats on an accessible steer, drive, or trailer position with an undamaged wheel are a mobile tire job — a tech installs a spare or a replacement on the shoulder and you're back on the road without a hook. That's the fastest and least expensive outcome, and it's what road service is built for.
A tow becomes the right call when the wheel or hub is bent, cracked, or gouged; when the vehicle stopped somewhere a service truck can't safely reach or work; when there's casing damage that needs a shop look rather than a swap; or when the position calls for equipment a road-service truck doesn't carry. Casing damage and what to photograph before the tech arrives
Casing damage — a cut, puncture, or impact near the sidewall that reaches the tire's structural layers — doesn't always look dramatic. A tire can hold air and still have a weakened casing that fails again without warning. That's the reason a road-service call-out sometimes ends with a tech recommending a shop inspection rather than a simple swap on the shoulder.
While you wait, four photos speed up the diagnosis and matter if there's a warranty or insurance claim on the tire: the tire itself, including the sidewall and whatever tread remains; the wheel and rim, checking for bends or cracks; anything the failed tire hit on its way out — fender, mudflap hanger, wiring, air lines; and a wider shot showing where the vehicle is stopped relative to the road.
DOT tread depth and out-of-service criteria
Federal out-of-service criteria set a tread depth floor of 4/32 of an inch on any steer tire and 2/32 on other axle positions, measured in the major tread grooves — not the shallow wear bars alone. A tire below that line, one with cords showing through the tread or sidewall, or one with a cut or bulge that reaches the cords is an out-of-service condition at a roadside inspection, not a judgment call left to the driver. If a unit gets red-tagged for a tire violation on top of an already-failed tire, that's worth flagging to whoever's dispatching the repair, since it can affect what the vehicle is allowed to do once it's fixed.
What to tell dispatch
The call goes faster, and the right truck shows up the first time, when you can give five things up front: the tire position (steer, drive-inside, drive-outside, trailer, and which side), the tire size if you know it, whether the vehicle is loaded and roughly how heavy, and your location by mile marker, nearest exit, or a dropped pin. Direction of travel matters as much as the mile marker on a divided highway — it's the difference between a truck arriving from the right direction and one that has to loop back through the next interchange.
KC metro corridors worth knowing
Drive tire failures cluster on the same stretches that see the most steady highway speed and load: I-35 and I-70 through the interchange downtown, I-435 and I-470 on the loop, US-69 through Overland Park, and MO-152 across the Northland. Each has different shoulder conditions — I-435's inside shoulder is narrow in spots, and MO-152 has stretches with barely a shoulder at all — so telling dispatch which corridor and which side matters as much as the mile marker itself.
The Broadway Bridge is its own case. There's effectively nowhere to stop safely on the span, so a tire failure there means getting the vehicle off the bridge — onto the approach on either end — before doing anything else, even if that means running a short distance on a compromised tire to clear the structure. Once you're off the bridge deck, follow the same rules as any other shoulder stop.
If you have to leave the vehicle
If the shoulder is narrow, traffic is heavy, or you don't trust the spot you landed in, staying belted inside with your hazards on is usually safer than standing outside next to live traffic. That reasoning holds whether it's a car, a pickup, or a semi cab — the exception is when the vehicle itself is a hazard to occupants, such as smoke, fire, or a position that puts the cab directly in the travel lane, in which case get everyone clear and behind a barrier if one exists.
